JEE Main is a national level entrance exam for admission to one of the best engineering colleges in India. However, with lakhs of students applying for a fixed number of seats, the competition is getting tougher with every passing day. If we look at the results of the last few years, a score of 200+ in the examination seems like a good score to target in order to get a seat with your desired college. In this article, we will offer some tips and tricks to help an average student score 200+ in JEE Main.
Whether you are targeting the best IITs or looking for a good B.E. institute, JEE Main is your first step. Before we talk about how you can score 200+ in the examination, we would like to bust a myth:
Myth – JEE Main is very difficult
Fact – JEE Main is competitive but not difficult. It is difficult only for those who don’t prepare for it.
With this myth out of our way, let’s take a look at how you can go about cracking the exam.
How to score 200+ in JEE Main
Here are some tips that can come handy:
Understand the Paper Pattern
The JEE Main exam is going to be different from all the exams that you have taken until now. It has objective questions and tests your understanding of the subject and not your memorizing capability. Further, JEE Main Paper I has 90 multiple-choice questions. Also, each correct answer fetches you 4 marks while each wrong answer deducts 1 mark from your total.
Focus on the Basics and Concepts
You might have heard this umpteen time before, but we will say this nevertheless. If you are eyeing a 200+ score in the exam, then you cannot do it without having clarity about the basics and concepts of all subjects and topics. Regardless of the time that you have in hand to prepare for the exam, if your concepts are not in place, you can forget about a good score. Start with the basics and then move forward. Even if you think you know the concepts well, revisit them and be sure.
You need books – NCERT Textbooks & Reference Books
Right from understanding the basics, to solving complex problems, the study material that you use plays an important role. Over the years, we have seen that students who use a combination of NCERT textbooks and reference books have an edge over their peers. Talk to your coaches/ guides about reference books and gain knowledge beyond the textbooks.
Manage your Time Efficiently
Not just in the JEE exam, but all through life, good time management skills are the stepping stones to success. You need to create a study plan which allows you to dedicate adequate time for each topic. Further, you must also avoid burning the candle at both ends and stressing out. Make a timetable and follow it diligently. Remember, managing time efficiently will help you maximize your preparation period and subsequently perform well in the exam.
Solve Previous Years’ Question Papers
Just in case you are wondering, questions are usually not repeated in the JEE Main examination. However, solving the previous years’ papers can give you a good idea about what to expect in the exam. Get a JEE Main Answer Key and compare your approach to the one mentioned there.
Take Mock Tests
Mock tests can play a crucial role in ensuring that you score 200+ in the exam. Here is what we recommend:
● Before you start preparing, appear for a mock test and see how you perform. Analyse your results to determine your areas of strengths and weaknesses. Based on this analysis, create a study plan.
● After you finish the first run of the entire syllabus, appear for a mock test again. Analyse your performance and see how much you have improved. Also, identify areas that need further attention and the ones that can help you score. Create another study plan to improve on your weak areas and further strengthen your scoring areas.
● Repeat this process until the last month.
Revision is important
In the last month before the exam, create a study plan for revision. Try to revisit all concepts and basics along with important formulae, chemical equations, etc. Try to stay relaxed and not stress about the upcoming exams. Stay confident about your preparation and avoid all urges to revisit your weak areas as they might dampen your confidence. Focus on your strengths instead and ensure that you are in a positive frame of mind.
On the day of the Exam
On the D-Day, get a good night’s sleep and try to wake up fresh. Reach the examination centre a little early so that you have enough time to relax before the exam. Shut all books. Observe the trees or birds or simply close your eyes and relax. You have worked hard and all you need now is, focus. Once the exam starts, avoid wasting too much time on questions that you are not sure about. Remember to focus on your strengths and get as many right answers done as possible.
In a nutshell
There is no magic trick to score 200+ in the JEE Main. All you need to do is start preparing with a plan and approach the process methodically rather haphazardly. Remember, cracking this exam requires persistent and dedicated hard work. Also, you will have some topics that you are not so good at. Accept it and try to find a way to get your brain around such topics. Also, if you don’t know an answer in the exam – don’t guess; guesses can be costly to your overall score. Good Luck!
