Are you going to take the IELTS Course in Dubai? Have you started the preparation of the IELTS yet? It is quite possible that you don’t know about the IELTS General and IELTS Academic. There is a sort of widespread confusion about these two. But when you have landed on this page, you will definitely move out of the page after clearing this confusion.

You will take the IELTS Academic if you are jumping into some professional registration or any English Speaking university. But if you are doing the IELTS for the migration purpose, you will move to the IELTS General. It’s as simple as described. IELTS has four parts to complete the test.

  • Writing task 1 & Writing Task 2
  • Reading
  • Speaking
  • Listening

Note: The difference between the IELTS Academic and IELTS General is Reading and Writing Task 1. 

Let’s explain how these tasks are different initializing with the writing task 1 and then moving to the reading.

IELTS Academic- Writing Task 1

In the IELTS Academic task 1, you will be asked the question in a way that you have to describe and analyze data in one of the following:

  • Diagram
  • Bar chart
  • Table
  • Line graph
  • Pie chart

IELTS General- Writing Task 1 

When it comes to the writing task 1 of the IELTS General, you will be ask the question to write a letter in one of the following styles,

  • Formal (to someone you do not know)
  • Informal (to friend or family)
  • Semi-formal (to someone you know formally)

To complete this task to write a letter, you will be provided with a time of 20 minutes and the minimum word count is 150 words.

Moving towards the reading task and let’s see how the IELTS Academi and the IELTS General are different in Reading.

IELTS Academic- Reading 

The points mentioned below are included in the Reading for the IELTS Academic. 

  • 3 long passages increasing in difficulty.
  • Manuscripts associated with academic subjects such as science, history, etc.
  • Academic style texts (textbook extracts or journal articles).

IELTS General- Reading 

When it comes to reading in IELTS General, note down the points. 

  • 4 compact passages growing in length and difficulty
  • More usual style texts.
  • Texts related to workplace survival (job descriptions, employment contracts, etc.), social survival (advertisements and more), general texts (magazines, travel brochures, newspapers, etc.)

To complete this task, you will occupy 60 minutes and have to complete both the reading tasks that include 50 minutes of reading time & 10 minutes to convey your answers on the answer sheet and there will be a total of 40 questions. 

Note: For listening and speaking, writing task 2 is the same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General.

You should know clearly about the format of the test, you will also be told if taking the IELTS Course in Dubai. If you have already joined any  IELTS preparation course you will get to know the details of the tasks and how to perform them. If you talk about writing task 2, it is just an essay that you have to complete in 40 minutes and a minimum of 250 words.

Then comes the listening test, in which you will hear some audios (4 in number) and you will have to answer 40 questions that in the 30- 40 minutes of the time.

Moving to the speaking test, you will have to give an interview to your examiner. There will be three parts of this test i.e. the interview, a short presentation and then the discussion. The overall time for this test will be 11-14 minutes.
